FAQs about Roof Repointing on the Central Coast
Is roof repointing worth it?
Yes, for most Central Coast tile roofs. Repointing costs a fraction of a full re-roof and, done with flexible compound, stops the leaks and storm damage that come from failed ridge and hip cap pointing. On an otherwise sound roof it's the single most cost-effective repair available, and skipping it usually costs more later in ceiling, insulation and timber damage.
How long does roof repointing take?
Most standard homes are completed within a day or two, depending on the length of ridge and hip capping and whether any rebedding is needed alongside the pointing. Two-storey or steep-access homes can take longer once scaffolding or an elevated platform is factored in. We confirm the expected timeframe during your inspection, once we know the full scope.
Can I repoint my roof myself?
Technically yes, but it rarely lasts. Getting proper adhesion, curing conditions and a UV and salt-resistant compound right takes experience, and applying flexible compound over old pointing that hasn't been fully removed is the most common DIY mistake we see, leading to failure within a season. A professional repointing job also comes with a written warranty, which a DIY job never will.
What happens if I ignore cracked ridge pointing?
Water gets into your roof cavity, often at a point well away from where the crack actually is. Left long enough, that moisture leads to timber rot, wet insulation, ceiling stains and structural damage that costs far more to fix than the original repointing job would have. Storms accelerate this process, so a small crack noticed today can become a much bigger repair within one wet season.
Does home insurance cover roof repointing?
Insurance generally covers sudden storm damage to your roof, not gradual wear from ageing mortar, so ordinary repointing maintenance is usually a homeowner cost.
