DIY coating products exist and can look cheaper on paper, roughly $600–$1,800 for a 200m² roof in materials alone, but they skip the professional rust assessment and correct primer selection that a proper job depends on, and a poorly prepped surface can fail years earlier than a professionally applied system.
The restoration process
Metal roofs need a different approach to tile because steel has very little natural grip for paint to bond to. Does metal roof restoration affect my Colorbond warranty?
It can, depending on the coating and preparation used, so it's worth checking before work starts. Can I restore a metal roof myself instead of hiring a professional?
You can attempt basic cleaning yourself, but full restoration on a Central Coast roof isn't a weekend DIY job. Getting the rust treatment, primer selection and coating film thickness wrong leads to early failure, and working safely at height on a pitched roof needs proper fall protection. Our crews are fully licensed and insured for exactly this reason, so the result actually lasts the 15 to 20 years it's meant to.
What colours can I choose for a restored metal roof?
Modern coating systems come in a wide range of colours, so a restored roof doesn't have to look like a repaint, it can genuinely refresh your home's appearance. We can match your existing colour or help you choose a new one, including reflective cool roof options that also help lower interior temperatures. Colour choice doesn't affect protection, since the performance comes from the primer and topcoat system underneath.
Will restoration stop my roof from leaking in heavy Central Coast storms?
Yes, when the leak is caused by failed sealants, corroded fasteners or a deteriorated coating, which is the case for most ageing metal roofs here. Our restoration process reseals flashings, replaces corroded fasteners with marine-grade alternatives and rebuilds the coating's waterproof barrier from the ground up. If a leak is caused by structural damage rather than surface failure, we'll tell you honestly if replacement is needed instead.
How often should a restored metal roof be inspected afterwards?
We recommend a check every 3 to 5 years, plus an inspection after any major storm, to catch early signs of wear before they become a leak or a bigger repair. Between inspections, keeping gutters and downpipes clear and rinsing off salt buildup periodically helps your coating last its full 15 to 20 year lifespan. Regular upkeep is what protects the investment you've made in restoring the roof properly.
